Here's How to Copy Large Files Faster

Surely you often copy files on your laptop, be it work files, videos, images or other files. If the file that is copied is large, it will certainly make you feel annoyed, because the larger the size of the file being copied, the longer it will take to complete the process of copying the file. Even though sometimes we don't have time to wait for the file to finish copying.

In this article, the author will share tips with you on how to copy large files on your laptop so that it can run quickly, so you don't have to linger waiting for the files you copy are done. Please see the author's tips below.

1. Using the TeraCopy App

To speed up the process of copying large files, we can use third-party applications. One of the best applications is TeraCopy. This application can be downloaded for free by clicking this link. Then click the Download menu, after the download process is complete you will have a "teracopy.exe" setup file. Run the file for the installation process and follow the prompts to complete.

Using the TeraCopy application is quite easy, for the copy process you can use the drag and drop feature, so that the copying process is carried out like in Windows Explorer. Every time you paste, a popup window will appear to offer you whether to copy or use TeraCopy or not. To copy large files, you should use this application, because the copy process is faster.

2. Format the disk into NTFS type

format disk fat32 to ntfs

In the Windows Operating System, we are familiar with the FAT32 and NTFS disk formats. The brief explanation is that FAT32 is a method of recognizing data clusters with a 32-bit format, the advantage of FAT32 is that it can be compatible with many operating systems, but the disadvantages are quite noticeable for those of us who want to copy large files.

This FAT32 format cannot copy files for sizes above 4 GB, and the data transfer process is slower than the NTFS format. Unlike the NTFS disk format, this format can copy files without file size limitations, and the copy speed process is faster. For Windows Operating System, by default, it uses NTFS format.

If you are copying large files to a flash disk or external hard drive, and you feel the copy process is running very slowly, you should check the disk format first, there is a possibility that the disk format is still using FAT32. To change the disk format from FAT32 to NTFS, you need to reformat it first, so you should backup the files on the disk and then reformat the disk.

Please follow the steps below to format the disk to NTFS. This method I did on Windows 10.

  • Right click on flash disk or external HDD
  • Select the Format menu
  • You will see a dropdown menu that says File System with various format options FAT32, NTFS, exFAT. Then select NTFS
  • Check on the Quick Format menu
  • Then click the Start button, and wait for the process to finish

After the formatting process is complete, you can check whether your disk has changed to NTFS, then continue the process of copying large files to the disk, you will feel the difference in the speed of the file copy process, compared to before the disk was still FAT32.

3. Change the USB Settings to "Better Performance"

Flash disk settings by default use "Quick Removal", this means you can safely remove the flash disk directly without the need to perform the "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" command.

Another option that you can choose is "Better Performance", this option activates cache writing (temporary data) on the flash. So it can speed up the process of copying large files. To change the USB settings, follow the steps below:

  • Plug the USB flash disk into your laptop or PC
  • Open Windows Explorer and right click on the flash disk
  • Select Properties and click the Hardware tab
  • Select the name of your USB flash drive, and click Properties
  • Click Change Settings and select the Policies tab
  • Then change the setting from Quick Removal to Better Performance

By changing the flash disk settings to Better Performance, the process of copying large files that you do will be faster, but one thing to remember, to unplug the flash disk should not be careless, you have to do the Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media command first, because otherwise You will be at risk of losing data or corrupt data.

4. Change Your Hard Drive to SSD

The most effective way to improve performance when copying large files is to replace HDD to SSD (Solid State Drive). SSD has the advantage of 4X faster data transfer Fast compared to ordinary HDD, has a stronger endurance, does not scale when it is doing the process of copying data.

Those are the ways that can be done to speed up the process of copying large file data, hopefully it can help all readers and can practice it yourself when copying large files.
